Nature’s Painting

We’re getting closer to snowflake season! In September/October 2014 I was able to get a head start and photograph beautiful frost patterns while traveling through the Yukon Wilderness.

This frost was growing on the window of a truck, and I dropped everything when I found it. We had just returned from an early morning boat ride and frost was forming on my camera lens before the sunlight was able to reach us – I knew there would be great frost to be found somewhere.

Frost offers far more variation in patterns, with loops and curls and jagged edges. It’s as if it grows like vines in a garden, only to vanish as soon as the sun rises.
