Edge of Shadow

Lilies love the sun; it is rare to find one growing in the shade. When you do, it is always growing on the edge of shadow – and simply glows. Like strong people, they shine the most when surrounded by darkness.

I photographed this lily from a boat that was moving through a small creek. The lilies lined the side, and most were in the bright sunlight. Bright light will blow out the delicate details in the pedals, so open shade is best to create this image.

Photographed in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario.
