Mallard in Flight

On the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, the Mallard Ducks constantly land and take off from small pockets of open water during the month of March. Sitting there with camera in hand can be a very peaceful and rewarding experience.

This photo won Barrie’s Picture the City Photo Contest in 2010.

I took this photo on the first day with a new lens (Canon EF 100-400mm F/4 L IS). I was using the birds to practice the focusing and zooming mechanics and get a feel for how well the lens would fit my style. I was happy with it.
