Dancing Waves

Sometimes it’s the simple things that make a great image.

This iris was begging to be photographed, and on closer inspection the petals seemed to be reflecting the light in interesting ways. It kept my attention for quite some time as I explored different lighting angles, intensities and shadows.

Focus is a challenge, trying to get all of the tips in focus. So was depth – adding areas of brightness and darkness is equal proportions without pushing any to the extremes. The art of lighting a flower is one enjoyed even in failure, and celebrated in success.

This was photographed in Santa Barbara, California as I was preparing to teach a macro photography workshop. I was sure to point them out to the students a few days later – there was much to explore!
