Livin’ on a Cherry

Springtails are extremely tiny creatures, often around a millimeter in size. If you’re not looking for them, you’ll never, ever see them. This Globular Springtail was found on the side of a rotting cherry (yum!) and stopped moving erratically just long enough to focus-stack this image together.

Because of their small size, you need more than one image to get it all in focus. This is five combined, all from slightly different focus points to give greater detail on the small scale.

    Photographed in Barrie, Ontario.
