Colour’s Edge

Sometimes I come across snowflakes that fit the classic imagination of what a snowflake should look like – this is one of them. Small but orderly branches, great symmetry across all sides… but one thing you probably wouldn’t imagine: colour!

View large to get a better feel for the colour and details, you won’t be disappointed. Some folks appreciate the edge-reflecting snowflakes more, so I try to keep a few of them this way. It also makes the colour shine a bit more vibrantly. These colours are created by the crystal itself. I’m uncertain if it’s caused by a prism in the crystal splitting the light, or some other form of optical interference…. but there you have it!
